Edward Said – Culture and Imperialism
Venue: Arab World Books Online
Date: July 27, 2024
Discussion of Edward Said's Culture and Imperialism took place on July 27 2024. You may now watch it here:
Following his profoundly influential study, Orientalism, Edward Said now expands his scope to explore the cultural component of Western imperialism. From Jane Austen to Salman Rushdie, from Yeats to the media coverage of the Gulf War, Culture and Imperialism is a broad, fierce and wonderfully readable account of the roots of imperialism in European culture. First published in 1993, it remains poignantly relevant to current events.
The Arabic version of this book is translated by Kamal Abu Deeb and published by Dar al-Adab.

I think that imperialism is an advanced stage of capitalism. One of the best writers that addressed this concept is Rosa Luxembourg. Imperial capitalism needs access to resources and markets to live as they (imperial capitalism) usually face problems with finding outlets for their economic surplus.

20:29:19 From Hoda Abouzeid : رد ويكيبيديا عن متى استخدم المصطلح:
The word “imperialism” was first produced in the 19th century to decry Napoleon III's despotic militarism and his attempts at obtaining political support through foreign military interventions. The term became common in the current sense in Great Britain during the 1870s; by the 1880's it was used with a positive connotation. By the end of the 19th century it was being used to describe the behavior of empires at all times and places
20:31:47 From Amr Madian : الامبريالية ترفض الابداع الذي يخالف منهجيتها رفض تام حتى لو كان العمل الأدبي متعدد وجهات النظر
