Celebrating the Life and Outstanding Achievement of Bahaa Taher 1935- 2022

Bahaa Taher, acclaimed Egyptian author and winner of the first International Prize for Arabic Fiction, passed away on October 27, 2022 after a long illness.

Bahaa was a personal friend and a longtime supporter of arabworldbooks.com. When I moved to Geneva in 1997, I was very lucky to be involved in a rich cultural life, gaining close friends like Bahaa Taher, Fawzia Assaad , Gamil Ateyya Ibrahim and Fawzia Al-Ashmawi, to name a few. When I launched arabworldbooks.com in 1998 , Bahaa was one of the first to encourage and give advice. In 2001 our readers club was introduced and in May we discussed his novel Nuqtat al-Nour in Arabic as well as Aunt Safeyya and the Monastery in English. At the time, Bahaa wrote in Akhbar Al-Adab to express how impressed he was to read online comments on his books for the first time; and that, for him, it had been an enlightening experience.

In 2004, our Board of Trustees was formed and we were honored to include him in our board. We have greatly benefited from his feedback, advice and solid support over the years. On January 27th, 2009 he attended Arab World Book's tenth anniversary celebration at the Supreme Council for Culture. A video of channel one's coverage of the event and photos of Bahaa Taher delivering awards may be found in our archives.

In this file we celebrate Bahaa Taher's life. It includes articles by Shaaban Yusuf, Hala El Badry, Ahmad Alkhamisi, ِAli Hassan, Mohamed Tawfik,  Marcia Lynx Qualey, Mohamed Shoair, Marwa Mazloum, Nashwa Ahmed and others. The file includes a film titled The Journey of Bahaa Taher produced by Afaf Tobala, as well as links to several other media files on the late writer.
