‘Mokhtar: His Life and Art’ is a short and ambiguous account of the life of the Egyptian sculptor by Badreddin Aboughazi. As if to emphasis his admiration to artist and his work and to give him a solid recognition which he clearly deserves, the late critic became a biographer. Keeping in mind that an artist eminence is in bringing out what lay inside him of hopes, ambitions, dreams and desires of what life should be, instead the author, in his very brief résumé, brought out what were society’s expectations of the artist and in the process little effort was made to explore the personal life of the genius pioneer who revived classical Egyptian sculpting. Mokhtar, a touching figure, was borne to a world that could not contain his talent nor his personal inspiration therefore he often deserted Cairo for Paris where he was free to talk and sculpt what he saw inside the solid stone. The sculptor’s relationship with his mother, which must have been pivotal in the development of the artist and the man, is barely mentioned; not even in her sorrow at the side of her beloved son‘s deathbed were we giving any glimpses of her relation with him. Instead we heard not enough about an unidentifiable French woman who befriended the sculpture. Unable to separate himself from his body's desires, the artist yearned for a hidden love which (we assume) was never fulfilled. It was the outside social forces that made of him unwilling searcher for both himself and the love he sought. Just reading the omissions between the lines, a doubt seeps out about the possibility or indeed the fact that Mokhtar might have had homosexual leaning. There is no doubt of the critic‘s love and admiration of Mokhtar, the man and his work. However Aboughazi failed to take us into an inner journey into the soul of the artist. No mention of Mokhtar’s love of his subjects, his qualities of perseverance, purpose and friendships. Each piece of work embodied into it the energy contained within his being, the meditation process and the inner essence of his soul. What a gripping story Aboughazi failed to write; of love, ambition, deprivation, ambiguous sexuality and betrayal in a future with the fate of Egypt at stake. Mokhtar, the Francophile, revived the classical Egyptian sculpting and blended it with contemporary reality derived from the Egyptian society, particularly its rural community. Of course Colossal figures of Mokhtar stature refuse to fade away. It is sad that his overwhelming emotions and the vivid memories of his life on the banks of the Nile came to life in Paris where he let loose his passions and the dreams that possessed his mind.

This remarkable book refers to the Mokhtar award for sculpture which was created by the
friends of Mokhtar after his death. Does anyone know if this award is still on?

One of the most notable scenes in this informative and very readable biography, is that
of the sculpture Mahmoud Mokhtar, almost completely naked being carried on the shoulders of his fellow art students in the latin quarter of Paris. Obviously the students enjoyed treating their inspired friend like a pharaoh. But this scene takes us back to the Bohemian art scene of the early twentieth century.
Another interesting piece of information is that the first models for the artist’s
masterpiece Egypt’s Renaissance was sculpted in Paris.
