Zahret Al Khoshkhash, a new long novel from master-storyteller Khairi Shalabi, is a harsh and somewhat overlong tale set in and around Alexandria of pre-revolution. The novel begins by telling us that Egyptian life hinges on morality and loyalty. But as the narrative progress life becomes what you make of it and unfortunately that means being ambitious and opportunist. Eventually the story becomes a compilation of mistakes, misunderstandings and muddles. That's not to say there's anything particularly unusual about this, we all do our best in responding to the challenges of life. Zahret Al Khoshkhash reveals the secrets that lies behind success which seems to mean that Power and wealth are held in the hands of the international Jew, a byword for the harmonious sounds of family, friends and neighbours.

Khairi Shalabi presents us in this new comprehensive novel with yet another example of the Egyptian novelist’s obsession with recording history. The history as it actually happens, as people experience it , a challenge to the official history of so called great deeds of Egypt’s rulers. Mr. Shalabi even included Naguib Mahfouz and Tawfik al-Hakim in a scene in a café as part of the novel’s events. How delicious!

i would like to say that in all arab countries there are many big writers pretended ti give thoughts and ideas which are difficult to be understood, no transparent culture for example i am aware that their essays do not amount to a new theory of real democracy sufficient to the need. Globalization means to them imperialisim. world-system nowadays to most of them is similar to (the complete war of the world) by H.Wells. In any opinion it is early to continue writing about them during recent critical time.

قرأت في الكتاب صفحات وصفحات واستمتعت بها جدا لكن بصراحة لم أنتهي منهم بعد لأن الكتاب طويل قوي.

This is probably the longest of Khairy shalaby’s works to date. After fifty books or so, this can only be a distillation of experience and wisdom gained from a long and full life watching people and dissecting Egypt’s social and political currents. To Arab World Books, an excellent choice as usual.

تتكرر في روايات هذه الأيام ظاهرة تستحق التنبيه وهو موضوع المراجعة خاصة عندما تكون الروايات كبيرة الحجم على هذا النحو فنجد مثلا أن الرواية تتضمن اشارة الى الدراسة في أكسفورد ومانشستر في لندن والمعروف طبعا أنهما في انجلترا وهذا مجرد مثال.

this book is a greatiest in a library of jobran khalel jobran i like it so much.. becouse He is talking about the really happy life and how to live in quit life...so cute!

Zahrat al-Khoshkash is a beautiful flower called also the flower of hashisha which are extracted to get al-hashisha to be used by addicted people because it is one of the hypnotic agents, those addicted people suffering from psychiatric problems such as anxious ,severe depression and social-health problems. The abuse of it especially those whom are suffering from depressive hallucination may lead to violence behavior to others. In Iraq Hashisha introduced after the occupation by American troops obviously it will be dangerous if it is used by Militia men of terrorists to give them false courage leading to the feeling of different crimes. I doubt that the government can reduce the trade of hashisha at the critical present situation. Actually I have no chance to find another goal for this Zahrat !!

يتميز الأستاذ خيري شلبي بأسلوب عربي جميل وبليغ، ويتمسك بالفصحى حتى في الحوار، لكنه يتمكن في الوقت ذاته من أن يجعل لغته لغة مصرية معاصرة حية، وهذه من أكبر انجازات كاتبنا المحبوب.

عجبتني هذه الرواية الثرية لروائي من أكبر كتابنا المعاصرين، ووجدت سرد تاريخ عائلة الشماشرجي هو سرد لتاريخ مصر يتسم بالشمول والدقة والرؤية المتعمقة وان كنت بصراحة وجدت هذا السرد مملا بشكل غير مناسب في بداية رواية طويلة كهذه.
