Although the pacing and some of the tales are uneven, Khaled Alkhamisi's "Taxi" is relatively quick and happy-go-lucky read. The fact that the main character (assumed to be the writer himself ) has a naturalist eye makes this book a valued study in the evolution of the teeming ecosystem of Cairo. I admit that I did get bogged down a bit in certain places, but overall I felt that getting through the book was entirely worthwhile, even though it left me wondering ‘who’s this ‘I’?’ who seems to spend his day jumping in and out of taxis. It’s quite obvious that the author has a sharp eye and good ear, he also has a natural penchant for storytelling. What struck me most in the book that Khaled Alkhamisi could have been travelling in any rickety taxi anywhere in the Arab world. Not once did I think the author is trying harder than he needed to prove that he knew his subject matter. The taxi drivers are in fact the same men roaming the streets of any Arab city or town. Though the repetitiveness of hardship and bad management of Egypt got a bit annoying, it is still the core subject for Arab citizens anywhere. The cabbies are shaped by their environment, their interactions with others around them and their place in the pecking order. I may complain a little about the lack of any redeeming characteristics of the assembled cast but all of them have cynical characters and are recognizable creatures of their milieu.

I found the story about the seat belts particularly hilarious but also quite revealing irrespective of what the objective truth maybe, clearly there is a disconnect here between ordinary people and their government.

I get the sense that the author chose a particularly uncomfortable perspective of Egyptian life. This in itself is very clever because a person who spends most of his life in cairo’s traffic lives in a kind of hell. I am sure however that there are other less desperate perspectives from which to describe this wonderful country.

This is a fascination collection of vignettes that cleverly encapsulates both the suffering, endurance and humor of modern day Egyptians. Congratulation are in order to Khaled Alkhamisi and to Arab World Books for their excellent selections.
