Nidaa Khoury

Nidaa Khoury was born in the Upper Galilee village of Fassouta in 1959. Khoury has published seven books of poetry, most of them in Arabic. The Barefoot River (1990) was published in Arabic and Hebrew, and The Bitter Crown (1997), censored in Jordan in 1997, was republished as Rings of Salt in 1998. The works of the Palestinian poet have been studied at Israeli universities and have been widely reviewed by the Arab press. Khoury has participated in over 30 international human rights conferences and literary festivals such as the Conference of Arab Poets (Amsterdam), the Conference of Human Rights and Solidarity with the Third World (Paris), Poetry Africa, the Poetry Festival of Jordan, the International Poetry Festival of Medellin, the St. Martin Book Fair, and the Napoli Conference on Human Rights. Khoury has worked for the Association of Forty, a human rights organization for the full acceptance of the “Unrecognized Arab Villages” in Israel. She is a member of the General Union of Arab Authors in Israel and of the General Union of Authors of Israel. Khoury, a senior lecturer at Ben-Gurion University, is the subject of the award-winning film, Nidaa Through Silence. Nidaa Through Silence, a short documentary about the poet, won first prize at the Global Art Film Festival in 2010. Sarab for Dance is also producing Khoury’s poem “Portal to the Orient,” which is in Book of Sins, for performance in Palestine. Khoury teaches at Ben-Gurion University. Book of Sins is the first trilingual book of poetry (English, Arabic, Hebrew) by this important Middle Eastern poet. Book of Sins is also the first collection by Nidaa Khoury to be published in the Caribbean and the Americas. According to the Turkish author Karin Karakaşlı, Book of Sins is “Written in water and ink, in between the shed blood.
