As a teenager, Khaloud Al-Muttalilbi moved from Iraq to England, where she finished her academic studies and has lived there ever since.
Her published works include Psalms under a London Sky (a collection of poetry) (2010), Under an Icy Sky (a collection of poetry) (2010), A Portrait of Uruk (Iraqi Literature, selected and translated) (2011& 2012) and The Contemporary Iraqi Poetry Movement: The Future of the Past (2012).
She translated Arabic poems into English, for poets from various Arab countries such as Algeria, Morocco, Palestine and Syria. She has also translated literary criticism articles. Khaloud has participated in The Anthology of Contemporary Arabic Poems as a poet and a translator, published by the Artgate Association in Romania. She has also translated selected poems of Modern and classic English.
A Portrait of Uruk: An anthology of poems and stories
A Portrait of Uruk aims to reconstruct the memory of Iraq by spreading the reaches of its literature, through translated verses from the pens of writers to the minds of the rest of the world. With each turn of the page, the book's heart beats with vivid words of poetry and prose, the lives they are inspired by and the colour of their emotion. The themes enact a wide range of social and political changes occurring throughout Iraq's unstable history including exile, the struggle against dictatorship, sectarian violence and the occupation. The authors featured are a perfect representation of the achievements of Iraq and the Arab world. They have enthusiastically welcomed the creation of this book and have contributed one or more pieces of their work, featured with a concise biography. The participants in this book have come from regions throughout Iraq, from Kirkuk, Tikrit and Baghdad to Nasiriyah, Missan, and Basra; others have lived across the world, in countries such as Holland, United Arab Emirates, America, Britain and Australia, after having fled the dictatorship of the previous regime. Despite these differences, they share the experience of Iraqi social and political legacy, expressed by each one of them through poems and stories that show their individuality and their unique perspectives, displaying raw emotion from the core of their souls.
