Dr. Abdulla Elmadani is a Bahraini academic researcher and lecturer in International Relations and Asian Studies. He was born in the city of Alkhobar, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, on April 8, 1951.
After the completion of his primary and secondary schools in Alkhobar and Bahrain, he studied in Bombay, Beirut, Cairo, Boston (USA), and Exeter (UK).
He holds a Bachelor degree in Economics from Beirut University, Master degree in International Relations with the Diploma of Specialization in Asian Affairs from Boston University, and Ph.D. in Political Science from Exeter University.
Over the past 20 years, he participated in numerous conferences, workshops, and seminars in and outside the Gulf region, on issues concerning regional security, international peace, dialogue among civilizations, economic development, and relations between Asia and the Gulf.
Currently, he is a visiting professor of International Relations and Asian Studies at several universities in the Arab Gulf region. He also writes a weekly article on Asian affairs in the leading Arabic and English newspapers of the Middle East.
In November 2005, he and his liberal Bahraini colleagues launched the Lana Haque movement, an umbrella group of some 30 licensed NGOs operating in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The movement is aimed at protecting Bahrain’s tolerant image and advocate personal liberties and freedoms of individuals that have been under threats from Islamic extremist groups. Earlier, he had been elected as vice president of the Future Forum Society, one of Bahrain’s NGOs. Recently, the board of directors of Bahrain India Friendship Society has unanimously decided to grant him Honorary Membership in the Society in recognition of his positive and valuable contribution to the development of greater understanding between the people of the Gulf and India. And in August 2009 he was elected as the chairman of Bahrain’s national committee for ethical journalism.
