Gabriel Garcia Marquez selected short stories 1947-1992 as translated by Ali Ibrahim Menoufi is a compelling and seductive collection. And though deceptive the author has an unobtrusive presence. He is a sympathetic recorder, a shrewd prompter and a clever editor. And though each story is a picture of a particular place at a particular time, the collection is not fancy nor necessarily pleasant, but each one comes out as a living portrait, convincing and sympathetic. And though the book as whole in, a sense, is an example and something typical of life in South America, nonetheless most of us could recognise within seconds of entering into a story something of ourselves. If the stories were as well translated as they had been written by the intellectually reckless, restless and wonderfully original Gabriel Garcia Marquez what a miscellany about life, loss and the human condition the book would have been; still it is a delightfully quirky effort.

I would like to thank arabworldbooks for their excellent and diverse selections. Marquez is no doubt one of the magicians of the word. It was a particularly enjoyable experience to read him in Arabic especially since, as I understand it, the translation was made directly from the Spanish.

استمتعت بغالبية القصص ما بعض الاستثناءات أبرزها القصة الاخيرة في المجموعة (رياح الشمال) وهي القصة التي وجدتها – رغم فكرتها الجيدة – غير محكمة البناء ونهايتها متوقعة أكثر من اللازم.

These stories were pretty good although I prefer Marquez’s novels particularly one thousand years of solitude which showcases the writer’s unique vision.

ليلة طيور الكروان من أجمل قصص المجموعة فهي تأخذ القارئ بسلاسة خداعة الى عالمها الخاص ثم تتركه في نهايتها لحياته اليومية كأنه استيقط من حلم.

تتميز رؤية ماركيز الأدبية في قدرته أن يلتقط مواطن الجمال والشاعرية في حياة البشر اليومية، فهو أدب بما به من جمال وبساطة يكاد أن يصل الى مرتبة الصوفية

شكر المنتدى على هذا الاختيار الجميل الذي يعد إضافة قيمة لمكتبة كل الأعضاء، فالكتاب يتضمن قصصا من مختلف مراحل أحد أعظم الكتاب العالميين، كما يضم مقدمة تتناول عرضا سريعا لأدب أمريكا اللاتينية بصفة عامة، وهو الأدب الذي حقق نجاحا عالميا نأمل أن يحققه الأدب العربي، شكرا لكم.

فقد ماركيز الكثير من جاذبيته بعد نيله جائزة نوبل، فالروايات التي أصدرها جميعاً ذات مستوى ضعيف جداً، ولا يمكن أن ترقى إلى رواياته التي بنت سمعته كخريف البطريارك، ومئة سنة من العزلة، وغيرها، وتبدو قصصه القصيرة عادية أيضاً، أما قصة الملاك فلا شيء مثير فيها قط. ومن يقرأها يخرج بانطباع أن ماركيز فقد قابليته على إبداع الشيء الجديد، فماذا كان وراء سقوط الملاك العجوز وعودته؟ أهي فكرة إنسانية عن طبيعة البشر تفضح الديكتاتوريات كخريف البطريارك، أم تضيف معلومات جديدة للقارئ عن طبيعة الحياة في كولمبيا كما في مئة سنة من العزلة؟ لا شيء
