I see the selection as a battle over who represents the authentic face of modern Arab poetry as it stands today, searching for inspirations in the post devastation of the twentieth century. Every poem is a cup of delight into the inner joys of a bard, sometimes at the most neurotic point in his life. The graphic details, the exuberance and imagination of the poets are absolutely authentic, describing the unchanging attitudes of Arab men to the chastity of Arab women and give us powerful and picturesque account of the resourcefulness of lovers, challenging similar circumstances despite the passage of centuries. With all the atrocities happening in the world today, to me reading the book was the escape to a world where the strings of water were indeed free from the wailing and the pain. title: Strings of Water commentsStrings of Water by Mohamed el-Makhzangy is an honest and beautifully written collection of short stories. In an ever-expanding circle of travel around the globe in a job of his dreams (?), the writer tells us about culture and love and about the silences they leave behind. This echo of Time is elegantly transferred into words in the short story ‘A briefcase in the colour of dusk and sand.’ On viewing chekhov‘s briefcase, the narrator transports himself back to the time of his boyhood in Egypt. Mohamed’s realisation of poverty, pain and frustration reflects well on the life of Arabs. The struggle of a mother bringing up her family is deeply felt and affects the lives of everyone on the planet. (I am assuming this is the author’s debut) - Mohamed el-Makhzangy is original and talented and in comparison to contemporary writers he is reasonably in good command of the Arabic language. A short peek into the author’s background would have helped me to appreciate more his storytelling.
