مما لا شك فيه أن
ميسون شاعرة متميزة
لكننى لا أفهم لماذا
تمللآ قصائدها
بالأعضاء والعروق
والعضلات ورائحة العرق
اى باختصار لماذا هذا
التشبث الجسدي صحيح
انه اصبح الآن من
الدارج ان تتبارى
الشاعرات فيما يعرف
بكتابة الجسد وربما
تتميز ميسون عن غيرها
في أنها مفتتنة اكثر
بجسد الرجل عن جسدها هي
وكذلك ربما تكون أكثر
التزاما من الأخريات
لكن المهم هو المعنى في
هذا الشعر، فالمعاني
السامية منعدمة
والأفكار الشامخة غير
ممثلة. لا يجب ان ننسى
ان الشعر هو أساسا
محاولة الانسان اللحاق
بروحه والسمو بمشاعره
لماذا اذن نتدنى الى
شعر الجسد!

Like all good poets, Maisoon Sakr is
not afraid of uncovering herself. In
this beautiful boook I am at times
surprised that she has so much courage,
I mean an Arab woman living in the
current situation in the Arab World. In
her poem (kissat al-morahanat
al-khasira) she relays a terrible
experience that all women live through
at one time or another. Most of these
poems are extrememly lyrical and poetic
with the exceptions where Maisoon tries
to be intentionally intellectual and
obscure.

Tashkeel el-Atha takes us onto an
exasperated exploration of Arab male
sexual conduct, fusing the poet’s
observations of contemporary realities
within a literary frame and social
associations. Maisoon Saqr sees the
desperate jollity of the (Arab) female
as a key element in her bondage, making
the poems seethe with the ghosts of
sexual tension. To be more specific, the
female bias is so entirely obvious, it
is not a question of being often uneven.
I wish it were. This unevenness is not
puzzling, unfortunately. It is simply
one more sad, and all too frequent,
expression of blindness towards
femininity, a double standard that
expects anything female to be
subservient to masculinity. Although
Tashkeel el-Atha is a deeply personal
and surprising book, it is not nearly so
explicit about what Maisoon Saqr thinks
the reader ought to envision.

I agree partly with Mr. Ali Tal in that
this book does not \give us a way out of
the current situation but then again how
can we expect someone to come up with a
magic solution when we all know the
problem is at heart a clash between
civilizations. The arabs have a just
cause but are underdeveloped so they end
up losing the military and propaganda
wars. On the other hand Israel is part
and parcel of the western world and
therefore enjoys superiority and
protection . But what this book
introduces in terms of new elements is a
very important shift that has taken
place in US policy (and this has become
very evident after September 11) namely
what has been coined as political and
social darwinsim. It is now considered
to be legititmate for Israel to commit
all types of atrocities against the
Palestinian people because this is a
world of the survival of the fittest.

Zionist Legend and Palestinian
Intifada is not quite the self-absorbed
book one imagines it at 1st glance.
el-Sayed Yassin delivers what he set out
to do, ripostes of a seminar to a
particular ism of numerous isms that
were fashionable between 1850 - 1950 in
the north European nation states; all
born to solve the sprawling poverty,
cramped and terrible living conditions
of masses in the cold, wet climates.
Rising living standards defunct almost
all of those ideologies: sadly some did
turn into homicidal dogmas. The book is
well written in the usual newspaper
editorial style, but not necessarily
from the standpoint of insightfulness, I
don't think that was the intent. I
didn’t find Zionist Legend and
Palestinian Intifada persuasive - the
author simply persuading that certain
Arab regimes’ course of action (mostly
lack of it) is acceptable. In our
culture self-criticism is a reflection,
a self-medication for the people's need
to feel better. Mr Yassin, now that
we’ve found some of the questions, any
answers!

What is important about the shallow
Zionist myths is not their authenticity
but rather the skill with which they
have managed to portray them to the
world. The Zionist movement has
succeeded not only in imposing its will
on the Palestinians by the force of
arms, it has more importantly succeded

force of its media. On the other hand,
the Arabs have failed to portray their
just cause effectively. Moreover our

You can never do a work of art any
justice in such few sentences. If
anything can be said about this work is
that it involves the eternal dialectic
of change, the clash of the past with
the present (as Amr Mahgoob noticed) ,
the traditional with the modern, it's
truly the most difficult of all
syntheses. The themes and languages in
the novel are always in conflict. As Ali
Tal mentioned there's a special
attention to detail, the details of the
past as an exaggerated central theme, as
if there's a hidden romantic wish for
resurrection. I agree with Borhan Riad
we should not delve into the allegorical
or allusive implications of the novel
because I also believe they are
universal rather than confined. I also
agree with Liana Akkad about the novel
being inspired by some forms of medieval
Arabic literature, but also somewhat
maintaining the harmonious structure
known of European novels(it's not just a
compilation of stories or anthology),
and this actually adds to the theme of
conflict represented in the novel. This
work seems at times like one of the
journeys of Ibn Batuta told in a
modern-day fictive literary manner, but
this is just my humble first reading
(sorry for taking too much space).

This is a work of political
significance by all means. But we should
not over emphasize the political aspect
because this is at heart a spriritual
journey. One of the sentences that comes
to mind is when the author stresses that
it is up to every person to decide upon
his death. Such depth should not be
overlooked by over stressing the more
simplistic political allegories.

Shath e-Madina is a mosaic of one
nation (Arab), but many peoples, many
religions, many political conflicts. The
book is a collection of surreal
explications developed under successive
waves often wild but mostly pensive
ideas detailed in distinguished and
beautifully lyrical styles growing from
inner hurt feelings. Gamal Ghitani
portrays people and culture struggling
to form anew their own identity separate
from a long and dominate Past. Does it
succeed, I think so. It is maintained
throughout the book that there had been
false gods but no intentional
conspiracies by the civil and cultural
institution as separate from the ruling
authority and that the whole Past is
exaggerated is at the centre of the
book. Gamal Ghitani is a courageous
writer who shows exactly how it was
done—and reveals how the escape
mechanisms are organised with the
enthusiastic support of everybody, with
the moral blindness of the ruler.

For some reason I have the feelling
that Mr. Ghitany does not think very
much of women. Throughout this novel,
women are treated as objects of man’s
desire. In some cases you get the
impression that the author finds women

كتابنا على إبراز
المواقف الجنسية
الفجة؟ أيرجع ذلك إلى

يتناول المدينة بالوصف
والتحليل فيصور
الجماعات والبلدية
ويصف الأبراج والأسوار
ويصف الشوارع
والبنايات ، بيد أنه
يغفل الأسس الروحية
والأخلاقية للمدينة،
متى نتعلم أن الأبراج
والأسوار إلى فناء أما
الأخلاق فهي الباقية.
ثالثا أرجو أن يكون
الأخ عمرو محجوب مخطئا
بشأن نية الأستاذ
الغيطاني في الموضوعات
التي أشار إليها
وأتمنى يا أخ عمرو أن
يتحدث كل منا في حدود
علمه وألا يتطاول أي
إنسان مهما تصور علو
شأنه على المقدسات.

This novel is really a compilation of
different stories, the café and it’s
consecutive owners, the 40 philosophers,
the 7 puzzles etc. In this regard, it is
a modern day descendant of traditional
Arabic story telling rather than a novel

سياسى فلسفى متعمق،
فمن ناحية يمثل الصراع
ما بين مجلس المدينة
والجامعة (ذات الطابع
التقليدى الذى يكاد
يكون دينيا) ، يعيد الى
الأذهان العلاقة
المركبة ما بين السلطة
الدنيوية والمؤسسة
الدينية التى ميزت
التاريخ الاسلامى
والتى لا تزال تلقى
بظلاه\لها على كافة
المجمتمعات الاسلامية
اليوم. ومن جهة أخرى
فإن الخلاف بين مجلس
المدينة والجامعة حول
أيهما كان الأسبق يذكر
بالجدل الفقهى الشهير
حول خلق القرآن ،
فعندما يقول الكاتب:
" هذه المدينة تعيش
صراعا قديما، يخبو
ويظهر." فأنه يلخص
أزمة الفكر العربى
المعاصر.
