الاديبة الرائعة عفاف طبالة قد وضعت يدها على حقيقة جوهرية وهي أن الطغاة دائما ما يحاولون إبقاء الرعايا في حالة جهل مزمن، وهي الرسالة التي أتمنى أن يتذكرها كل من يسعى الى الإصلاح في المرحلة المقبلة، فالاصلاح يبدأ دوما بالتعليم.

This novel takes us back to the golden age of the novel. There is a coherent plot subdivided into sub plots and the conflict between good and evil is apparent. Also the characters are interesting and the theme somewhat new. Overall it is a good addition to the Arab library.

هذا عمل أدبي هادف لأنه يؤكد على قيمة العلم والتعليم والعمل والاصرار وأشكر المنتدى على اختياره كما أتمنى أن ينتقي أعمالا مثيلة مستقبلا بدلا من بعض الروايات التي تحض على المعاصي.
كما اتمنى ان تعاودوا توصيل الكتب الى المشتركين حيث أنه من المتوقع اننا سوف نجد صعوبة في الحصول على الكتب التي تختارونها في المستقبل وقد تكون غير متوفرة بالبلد التي نعيش بها.

Another great selection from Arab World Books from another great Egyptian writer whose Hemminway- like literary style is both beautiful and sparse. Each story is a masterpiece. Fouad Kandil is without a doubt one of the giants of Arabic Literature.

تمزج هذه المجموعة القصصية بين موهبة الكاتب المتوهجة وخبرة الكهل صاحب الخبرة في الحياة، وأذكر علي سبيل المثال أحلام مخصصة للانتقام والتي يتناول فيها بشكل مبتكر الخيانة الزوجية وعدم معقوليتها بل وتفاهتها بالمقارنة بالحياة الزوجية الثرية المتكاملة التي تهزها الخيانة حتى الأعماق، وكل هذا في سرد جميل يمزج الحب بالغضب بالكراهية بالأمل.

يتناول الأديب الكبير في قصة حدثني عن البنات جدلية العلاقة بين رغبة الشباب الجامحة وحكمة الشيخوخة، حيث تتناول القصة في خطين متوازيين رغبة الشاب في الزواج من الفتاة التي أحببها رغم معارضة والده لعدم مناسبة الفتاة له بينما يتناول الخط الآخر تجربة الجد ذاته مع فرسته عندما حاول ابعادها بالقوة عن وليفها وبحنكة كبيرة يزاوج الكاتب الكبير بين الخطين ليخرج لنا عملا فنيا به رؤية انسانية وادراك للمأساة البشرية.

نحتاج دائما لفكرجديد مبني علي أسس قويمة ولعل عالمنا اليوم قد جانبه الصواب أو الخطا في رؤيته نحو تحرير العقل بمفهوم فلسفي ينلع من علاقة المثقف بالسلطة وكذلك بالقوة لكن ما نحرص عليه أن يكون الحوار الإسلامي ترجمة لما يحدث اليوم في العالم من ثورات ربما لها كثير من علامات الأستفهام ومع اليقين بأهمية عرض مثل هذه الكتب من خلال منتدي الكتاب العربي نري أن الحوار الإسلامي لا يفيد لأن البوذية ليست بديانة سماوية ؟ فالجهد هنا ضائع ولن يفيد بل يجب استعادة روح وجوهر الحضارات بعقلية تفتح الأبواب والقنوات أمام من يفكر لا لكي يتلقي فقط بتعمد هو في حقيقة الأمر يعيدنا إلي عصور القرون الوسطي ؟ والعنوان المطروح الحضارة العالمية حوار اسلامي بوذي يحتاج إلي مراجعة جادة من قبل المعنيين بهذا الطرح وكل مثقف جاد يسعي لخدمة العلم ومد العقل بطاقات هائلة تبني لا تهدم !

One cannot help but notice this collection’s extensive scope. It is as diverse geographically as it is culturally. The narrator refuses to belong to a specific ethnic or religious group. That in itself is admirable. However, one cannot help but wonder if the poet has not stretched himself thin.

This is another great selection from Arab World Books. Coming from a culture where it is quite common for poets to mix clichés with verbal acrobatics, here is a truly original voice. His sense of displacement is perfectly symptomatic of the modern soul, but it also points to his Palestinian origins. But rather than confine himself to parochialism he liberates himself through a profound humanistic sense.

As I began to read "Rihana" a novel by Maisoon Saqr, I thought she was going to introduce me to the old traditions and haunting world of the old Arabian Gulf, in particular the small Emirate of Sharja. As the Novel took off, it became hard to separate the charters from the author's own reflections which often cut the reader from the fluidity of the events. Of course, as expected from Saqr, the poet as Shamsa, was in exquisite prose. But we are still deprived from the fuller descriptions of life at a time of between the old ways and the new more self-conscious incoming times. I wanted to understand the psyche of the intelligent and self-aware Rihana, a fiercely human character; the hurt of her birth into slavery; her deprivation of choice and the psychological reasons behind her demise, which was predicted. The novel also had a political angle; the power struggle within the ruler's family, the British colonists and the clash over slavery. This complex mix needed more depth than mere references. There were only glimpses of how the transformation of a small traditional Arab community with hundreds of years of passion, secrets and loyalty and how the new life of wealth were going to entwine by fate and by the people's own actions. I wanted to know the secrets hidden in the desert landscape itself.

This was quite an interesting read. Following the different narrators was a big challenge
though. I am not a literary expert and I cannot really say if hopping between one
narrator and another has any literary merit but on the whole I enjoyed reading it very
much. What struck me most was the realisation that there is not really much difference
at all between eg the two main characters Rihana and Shamsa or any slave and their
master. Are any of us really ever “FREE” ? or are we just (regl pantaloon) that can do
nothing but follow our owners footsteps? With such a miserable fate whatever did Rihana
gain off getting her freedom?
Many of the conversations between Hadef and Shamsa also pointed to that meaning.

عجبتني الرواية جدا وشخوصها ثرية ومتنوعة ويبدو لي انها سيرة ذاتية للكاتبة مليئة بالاحداث والتاريخ الشيق ومكتوبة باسلوب شاعري ، وعجبني كمان تقسيمها الى اجزاء وفصول تلاشى بينهم التسلسل الزمني ، والكثير
منها جاء قصيرا ولكن ينطبق عليه ما قل ودل فعلى سبيل المثال:
شخصية علي تعرفنا عليه في جزء بعنوان رجل اسمر ضعيف وانتهت علاقتنا به في جزء قصير جدا بعنوان له دلالته " شخص طارئ في الحياة"
وفي ص177 جزء لا يزيد عن نصف صفحة
"هذا هو الوجه الذي يراه في المرآة امرأة خليعة لكن العالم كله لا يستحق غير ذلك"
عبرت عن شخصية محراك ومأساته ومأساة البشر عامة بجدارة وفنية عالية

كنت أتصور أن هذا الكتاب يتعلق قبل كل شئ بما أصبح يطلق عليه بقدر غير قليل من الابتذال الوحدة الوطنية، لكنني بقراءته المتأنية تبين لي أنه كتاب يتناول التاريخ بالدرجة الاولى فهو ينازع النظرة الغربية الإمبريالية لتاريخ مصر القديم ، ويؤكد على أوجه الاستمرارية في تاريخنا.

يطرح هذا الكتاب المهم سؤال مهم، حيرني شخصيا كثيرا، ألا وهو متى انتهت الحضارة الفرعونية؟ وبغض النظر عن قضايا الاقباط والحضارة القبطية .... الخ إلا أنه يخيل لي أن تحديد موعد نهاية الحضارة الفرعونية يعد قضية محورية في تارخنا واندهش لآن مؤرخينا لم يعطوها الاهتمام الكافي، والآن وبعد ما فهمت جيدا موقف هذا الكتاب اتمنى أن أقرأ ردودا من مؤلفين آخرين فالمسألة كما تبدو لي تتعلق بجوهر تراثنا ولا يمكن التساهل بشأنها.

comments: Egypt's Coptic Civilization, pages from Egypt's history, is written (or edited) by Munir Ghabbour and Ahmed Osman. The main point of this well researched and written literary work seemed to me to be how utterly at odds is the Egyptian Christianity with the grim vision of the Coptic history peddled by the Western intelligentsia. Having always assumed that the Semites (including Copts) Christian period began with the Roman occupation of the Eastern Mediterranean to the Muslim era. It is commonsense to say that the Christians of Egypt must have suffered the same terrible fate of their other coreligionists under the tyrannical rule of the bloody Roman emperors. Despite its many warring sects, the flowering of Christian civilisation in the land east of the Middle Sea was during the Byzantium period. Whence I saw the title "Egypt's Coptic Civilization" I was immediately intrigued and began reading to fill in the gaps in my knowledge of the Coptic culture. Unfortunately instead of supplying the Arab reader with a multi-voiced portrait of the Coptic church, the authors were more interested in defending it against the aspersions of the West. Mr Ghabbour and Mr Osman made the usual mistake assigning the Hellenization of the Eastern Mediterranean to the Greek. When during the period of 1300 years that preceded Islam, first Persian then Greek ideas freely mingled in the Levant. Thus "Hellenism" means the adulteration of the Semitic civilisation by Persian and Greek pressures upon our civilization. In fact, examining the influence of Persia on our culture we find it is the more lasting. Of course, the Western claim that Ptolemaic and Seleucids dynasties were foreign to our land is, of course, false and does not even qualify for an answer: is it not the case that Greece itself is part of the Eastern Mediterranean. Its ambitious ruler, Alexander the Macedonian, sought to expand southward and not northward. It is not Western Europe who has a claim upon the Greeks heritage, but us, the Semitic people. And as for the Coptic civilisation, I am still waiting to know their struggle to keep their identity.

By all means this is a controversial book about history. My problem when I read such books, is that I need a reply from other historians. Are all the claims that the two authors put forward correct or not? People like myself are never in a position to give a definitive answer. I always thought that Hellenic culture had nothing to do with the ancient Egyptians but suddenly here you have two Egyptian authors who are claiming that there was no such thing as Hellenic culture but rather that the Macedonian rulers of Egypt adopted ancient Egyptian culture and allowed a number of greek scientists and philosophers to build upon it and produce some of the most important mathematical and scienitific discoveries in history.

على غلاف هذا الكتاب اسمان لمؤلفان هما الأستاذان منير غبور وأحمد عثمان وقد سررت بداية بهذا التعاون بين مؤلف مسيحي وآخر مسلم لضمان الحيدة والموضوعية وكنت في هذا الصدد أتوقع أن يتحدث الكتاب بمنظور المثنى أو الجماعة لكنني وجدته يتحدث من منظور الفرد لهذا فأنني أطرح هذا التساؤل: أيكون كل من المؤلفين كتب بعض الفصول بمفرده ثم قامت دار النشر بتجميعهما معا؟ أم يكون هذا العمل في حقيقته من إنتاج مؤلف واحد ولكنه استعار اسم صديق له لإعطاء القارئ الإيحاء بالموضوعية؟

As an Egyptian Copt, I felt pride reading this book and I was surprised to read Jamal Zeid's remarks on it. I do not believe he has read this book , this can't be his comments on this work. Rather,it must have come from a bad experience or meeting with people who gave bad impression to others. It is a real pity. Then again perhaps that is how things are when you are out of the country. You hear events happening at home on the news and you think it is the end of the world.

I agree with all those who have highlighted the struggle between East and West in the interpretation of history. However it is important to note that this book contains a useful summary of the evolution of Christianity in Egypt and the history of St. Mark’s church. This in itself is useful information for all Egyptians and other arabs. We should never forget that this is a region in which Christians know much more about islam than muslims do about Christianity.

أنا اتبسطت جدا من قراية هذا الكتاب لاني استوعبت ولاول مرة حجم الخلاف بين الكنيستين المصرية والغربية وحسيت كده ان الكنيسة الغربية غير مرتاحة لان تكون الكنيسة المصرية هي اول كنائس العالم. وعشان كده حاولت تزور التاريخ عشان تبين ان كنيستنا جت في فترة تاريخية بعد انشاء كنيسة روما. ولذلك اشكر المؤلفين لانهم كشفوا ابعاد المؤامرة الغربية وشكرا.

Through the years, I met, and talked with several Egyptian Copts. I also read what some Copts wrote about Egypt and Egyptians.
What is striking is how bad, and how negative, the Copts view Egypt and Egyptians. As a matter of fact, several years ago, one Copt wrote that the Copts should do to the Egyptian Muslims what the Spanish Inquisitors did to the Muslims in Spain: For those who do not convert to Christianity or those who speak Arabic: Torture/Death or expulsion.
I am amazed that I found no sign of an effort at reconciliation or living as brothers / equal citizens. I do not understand this toxic attitude.
